Where’s the ‘Thanks’ in Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving has become a doormat for Black Friday discounts.

What happened to giving Thanks to God on Thanksgiving? That was what the first Thanksgiving was all about; giving heartfelt thanks to God Almighty, who provided the needs and wherewithal for life to those who trusted in Him.

Many Thanksgivings to follow were also celebrated primarily by giving thanks to God for our earthly liberties and abundance, while America was still a nation of GRATEFUL people. Our gratitude was directed properly, to God, not our government. It now appears we are loosing our greatness and stature in the world as a nation state and it may very well be due to the fact that the majority of Americans are no longer grateful to God for much of anything. We have become a nation of complainers and takers and we are getting angrier by the day.

Ironically, we also disdain people who chronically complain about anything and everything without offering possible solutions for positive change, and in doing so focus on the wrong problems. We are seeking perfection in this world that is not possible by man alone, or even necessary. No wonder our lives manage to find troubles within. What happened to contentment with what we do have and be thankful for all of it?

It has been said that when you have your health, you have everything. These days we take our temperature on so many different levels we get confused about what is most important about truly living well. What’s the temperature of our financial health, our work, our social status, our power of influence, our family relationships – all of which are judged with eyes through our world view which is distorted by marketing, or at least our desire to keep up with our pursuit of THINGS and objectives, for ourselves. We give to get.

Everyone needs to rethink Thanksgiving. Why do you celebrate the day?

Erma Bombeck once noted that the twelve minutes it takes to consume a huge Thanksgiving meal that took hours to prepare was about the same as half-time for the football game on TV. Shame on all of us. We eat too much, watch too much TV, and this year too many of us will be standing in line to get a lower price on THINGS that should not matter as much as they always seem to do because we like to think the shiny, new toys and electronic gadgets enhance our lives and productivity, rather than providing escape from reality.

The French historian, Alex de Tocqueville, once observed that America was great because America was good… or at least the notion that America was a nation under God (i.e. protected and prosperous) as it was purported to be. In his day there was no shame for Americans openly fearing the Lord, and the ones who believed in God actually practiced what was being preached… gratitude, repentance, forgiveness, salvation, and the rewards or consequences of heaven and hell.

Alex de Tocqueville also said, “Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith.” However, ‘faith’ in what or whom, is the real issue. Without the biblical standard of morality, we are lost in sin. Our faith as a nation seems to have shifted from faith in God, to faith in our faith, and faith in ourselves, which is misplaced and misguided. No wonder so many people are without hope, because the magic of believing in ourselves alone, simply does not work, regardless of what Norman Vincent Peale once wrote in great error.

Nothing has changed but us. God is still the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, and now sitting on His throne in Heaven, waiting for us to see through the dark clouds of deception that are already upon us, and turn back to Him.

It is NOT about this world, or things, that matters most. Our war is NOT with flesh and blood, especially when we disagree or are outright offended by others with different beliefs. Our real war is with higher powers that be within the spiritual realm who do interfere with our daily lives, and our affairs with other nations, because our focus in America is no longer on the Lord Jesus Christ and God the Father, who are in heaven.

Even if you do not believe in God or Jesus, that is your prerogative but it does not change the truth of the matter. God is Almighty and whether you choose to believe and respect that fact or not, is your choice. It’s called free will.

If America is to remove or diminish the threat of judgement by God, then America needs to return to a nation of God fearing people who are grateful to God, taking Him and His Word seriously, and judge ourselves correctly, so we will not be judged.

Today, it’s more difficult than ever to find the truth coming out of pulpits in America. The preachers have fallen victim to marketing and strive to fill the pews by tickling the ears of the congregations who support the church financially. Doing ‘church’ is BIG BUSINESS. In other words, give them what they are willing to pay for, is the loudest message, instead of the true one.

People, wake up. You don’t need a building to worship God. You need a right heart surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, which will please God, and your soul will be satisfied regardless of what happens to the flesh which is only temporary housing. You are more than your body of flesh. You are a spirit and soul, within a body, so give thanks to God this Thanksgiving… for EVERYTHING.
